Bakelite was invented by a Belgian Dr in the early 1900`s. It was the first plastic that was made from all synthetic materials. When it first debuted it was used mostly in radios and telephones because it was heat resistant. It could be used as a porcelain replacement.
As time went on it was used as kitchenware and jewelry. The Bakelite Company started in 1922 after a lengthy patent litigation. Back in the day Bakelite was used in a number of different products. One could find Bakelite in Saxophones, cameras and electric guitars.
One famous Bakelite product was the Ansco Panda. It was a camera made for children. It was made in the 1950' but now is a popular collector`s item. Another popular toy made from Bakelite is Bayko. It was a construction set made of Bakelite plastic parts. Of course the jewelry remains super popular.
